LJS Psychiatry

Welcome. Thank you for your interest in what LJS Psychiatry offers. You or someone you know may be suffering from emotional distress and seeking relief.  Our approach facilitates an environment where people are able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and wishes in a setting that is inherently collaborative, caring, and non-judgemental.  A strong therapeutic relationship is the most powerful means of treatment and developing this alliance is something that we hold to be of the utmost importance.

LOREN SOBEL, PSYCHIATRIST, PSYCHOANALYST

DYLAN TODA, Licensed Associate Professional Counselor

 Clinical Consultation and Supervision

For more than ten years, I have provided clinical supervision and consultation to psychotherapists across disciplines — psychiatrists, psychologists, professional counselors, and social workers — at every stage of professional development. This work grows directly out of my commitment to psychotherapy education: I have run a weekly psychotherapy course for psychiatry residents since 2015, I teach an Advanced Psychodynamic Psychotherapy seminar at UPMC, and I helped found the Western Pennsylvania Community for Psychoanalytic Therapies, where I lead the curriculum design, teach, and provide consultation to clinicians throughout the region. My writing has appeared in ROOM: A Sketchbook for Analytic Action and I have been invited to present my work at international psychoanalytic conferences.

Who this is for

I work with clinicians seeking ongoing supervision of psychodynamic or psychoanalytic treatments, as well as those wanting consultation on a single case — an impasse, a treatment that has gone quiet, a patient who stirs something difficult in the clinician. You do not need to identify as a psychoanalytic therapist to benefit from this work. Some of the clinicians I supervise are steeped in the tradition; others are trained primarily in structured or manualized approaches and want to develop a deeper way of listening to what is happening in the room.

How I work

My orientation is Relational, informed by the interpersonal tradition and contemporary object-relations thinking. In supervision, this means we attend closely to process: what is happening between you and your patient, what is being communicated beneath the content, and what your own responses — including the uncomfortable ones — might be telling us about the treatment. Supervision itself is a relationship, and I try to make it one in which you can bring your actual work, including the moments you are least proud of, without fear of judgment. That is where the most useful learning happens.

Format and fees

Consultation and supervision are available as an ongoing weekly or biweekly commitment, or as time-limited consultation on a specific case. My fee is $225 per clinical hour. I recognize that clinicians are at very different points in their careers and financial lives, and I am willing to make adjustments based on financial circumstances — please raise this with me directly.
